First and foremost,  you have to providing valuable content that people will want to read so they will return to your blog. Give people something worth visiting your blog for. Make sure you’re not adding duplicate content. Meening your not just steeling other peoples writings and pasting them into your blog. If Google notices duplicate content it will not rank your post in the searches.

Finding a cool theme for your blog is important, however not all blog themes are very readable by search engines. To start you don’t need to invest in a premium theme, there are many free themes for WordPress. A good theme to start with is Twenty Eleven; it’s a free theme that you can find through your WordPress dashboard. Free WordPress themes can be found all over the Internet, but you have to be careful which one you choose. Many of the designer themes look good, but the search engines have a hard time reading the content. StudioPress and Thesis Frameworks which are paid themes but work very well.

Permalinks are the structure of your URLs. The URL is the address of your post and or website. The URL is one of the things the search engines use to determine the content of your blog. In WordPress, the default setting does not show the blog post name or keyword you must set this to show the post name. To do this, on the left side menu go to settings, then, permalinks and then click the button for custom structure then enter /%postname%/ in the box. This setting adds your blog post title to the URL making it easier for the search engines to rank your post and keywords ranking you higher.

Research a keyword or keyword phrase when you write the post! You can write a post then seach for a relivent keyword phrase to match your post or search for a phase then write about it. Use the Google External Keyword Tool and type in words until you find a relevant keyword with low competition and a decent amount of searches. To start use keywords with less then 1000 monthly searches with LOW competition. As your start gaining traffic you can use keywords with more searches. Make sure you use that keyword or phrase in the title, tags, description, and several times throughout your post. Your keyword density should be 1-2.5%. Use your keyword or phrase as Header 1 (H1), H2, and H3 in your post WordPress makes it very easy to do this.

Another great blog SEO tip is to always have an image on your post. Make sure you add an alt tag with your keyword to the image. (see blog SEO Tip #6) Pictures add to the story and make it more interesting to the reader and they will break up the text.

The search engines cannot read images so you must add an ALT tag to every picture you place in your posts. Search engines only read the text on your blog. When you upload a image to your blog you’ll see a field called ‘Alternate Text’ this is where you need to add your keyword or keyword phrase to the image. This will identify your images for the search engines.

Add a hyper link in your post. You can link to your About Page, Training Page, Resources Page, etc. Link to all the pages on your site that don’t change or a relevant blog post you did in the past. Google loves to see deep links. Google will reward you for it as long as the link is relevant to your article. You should have 2 to 5 deep links in each of your posts.

These free WordPress plugins add to your SEO on your sight. You can download them through your dashboard. You can then set your meta tags, title and description for each post, which makes it easier for the search engines to see what your blog is about. After you’ve installed the pluins you will need to go to the setting’s tab and create your homepage title, add a description of your blog and list some relevant keywords. Links back to your blog from someone else’s blog is a GREAT way to gain credibility from search engines. By commenting on other blogs that are relevant to your blog you leave a backlink. A backlink is a link that the search engine robots can follow from one blog back to your blog. This type of link can help index your site, improve your SEO and give authority to your site. It’s important to gain as many backlinks from other websites as possible. Backlinks help to build your page-rank. The more backlinks you have, the higher your blog will be ranked. Especially if you are linked from more popular web sites that have a large amount of traffic. It’s like a seal of approval and tells the search engines, hey, this must be an important site, because of all the links going back to it.
